2004 - Stardust successfully flies past Comet Wild 2, collecting samples that it will return to Earth two years later.

1920 - Isaac Asimov, Russian-born author (d. 1992)
1969 - Christy Turlington, American model

2005 - Frank Kelly Freas, American artist (b. 1922)
I'll also point out the January 2nd is the Feast of Saint Basil and a public holiday in Scotland and New Zealand. Proper order, I say.
