It is my dearest wish that that man and everyone surrounding him should be tried at the Hague for as war criminals for crimes against humanity in my lifetime. In absentia if necessary; I don't care. The idea of them all being unable to leave the country (not that they strike me as having any particular desire to do so anyway) for fear of being arrested and imprisoned fills my heart with joy.

I am particularly disturbed by this:

I call upon the people of the United States to participate in this national observance and to display the flag of the United States on Loyalty Day as a symbol of pride in our Nation.

Perhaps I am paranoid, but this sounds far-off claxons in my head and wonder at the fate of those Americans who decide that, for whatever reason, they would not display the flag on "Loyalty Day".

I am also somewhat disturbed that, having already Independence Day as a national holiday, the administration feels that this is, on any level, a useful idea for the American people.

To me it seems a pointless proclamation.

Not pointless if your aim is to foster an us-vs-them mentality, to dissociate a workers' holiday from any liberal or socialist connotations it might have in the popular imagination, and to flag-wave in the now traditional manner, ignoring the general mood of the public who may wonder if there's a lot left to be proud about.

Perhaps I'm overly cynical. I'm certainly glad I'm not living in the States currently.

What's your point? I'm not saying Bush invented it. I'm saying it's inappropriate for any government to mandate a day of prayer, multi-denominational or not.

This atheist is praying for an end to 'National Days of Prayer'.
