Last night's D&D game saw our intrepid party finally make its way down to the second level of the dungeon after a steady grind through the orcs inhabiting the first level of the caverns. We were immediately set upon by a bunch of stirges who drained a total of 13 con out of three of the party. Only the sorcerer remained untouched thanks to his mage armour.

My character, the cleric Grann Faloon, had already encountered stirges earlier in the day and was already down. At close of the session, the once healthy priest (Con 12) was reduced to a frail shadow of himself (Con 5). Not a scratch on him and he's still down 16 hit points. Bloody touch attacks. At +6 no less. grr.

Still, we're down to the second level, and a little rest (and a lot of Lesser Restoration spells) should get us back up to full strength.

Um... Why was the Sorcerer untouched? Stirges attack via a touch attack, not an incorporeal touch attack, right? (iow, they really "just have to touch you", which Mage Armor doesn't help against, as opposed to undead who have to -hit- you, but are incorporeal and so go through normal armor as if it weren't there.

Hmm. I've heard about how annoying stirges are, though unadvanced, it seems like their slow attacks (they only drain blood if they -begin- their turn attached) should make it relatively easy to deal with them with only a little pain; just set yourself on fire or have the wizard do so with a Burning Hands or something. (or if there are only a few Stirges, have people attack other's stirges and kill them, which is generally easier than pulling them off).

Well, it looks like we had a couple of errors in our understanding of the rules last night.

Mage Armour shouldn't have counted against the stirges' touch attacks and the stirges got their blood drains in on the same round they latched on.

Hey, you (hopefully) live and learn.

*nod* I guessed as much, after reading the initial post and re-reading the Stirge's description.

D&D has probably the most errors per session of any game on this planet. (hell, I realized on Thursday that I'd messed up not one, but two rules in the previous session, both letting my familiar move and prepare an Improved Blink escape (...actually, you can do that. Ready is a standard action.) and using the Swift blast from Lord of the Sky (twice, via the "share with a familiar" hack) at non-airbourne opponents. [hmm. Ok, that's funny enough to be worthwhile: Lord of the Sky, Defenestrating Sphere. Move action to hit someone with the sphere, then if it sends them flying, Swift action to hit them with a lightning blast while they're "airbourne"].

I used some Stirges in my Emirikol game a few months back, and the realization that they didn't get to drain blood the round they attached made them much less threatening than I'd thought. It did force the normally pristine Fighter/Rogue/Aristocrat to wallow in dried horse dung (the stirges were in an abandoned stable) in a classic "stop, drop and roll" move to clear the little buggers off his back. Final damage was 5 points of Con loss between 2 PCs.

They burned some Honor Points to mimic Bears Endurance spells and went right on with the dungeon. Honor Points - they're your friends when it comes to keeping the game moving.

It's a bit confusing. The 3.0 MM doesn'r explicitly say the drain comes a round after the touch attack, so we could be excused the error. I have to check the 3.5 SRD later.

Bear's Endurance (and all of the stat enhancing 2nd level spells) were nerfed in 3.5 and only last minutes not hours now. Otherwise I would have dumped a couple of scrolls (prepared ahead with this sort of thing in mind) and we could proceed. As it is, it's time to recharge the CON and the spellbank.

Roll on 4th edition, where they're trying to remove this 'best five minutes of the day' syndrome caused by spell casters' spells-per-day rules.

Stirges are nasty little buggers if there are an awful lot of them.

Finally, some insightful relevant commentary from this blog.

Hah. That's rich coming from a content-free newt. Mind I don't set the stirges on you, mate.

Unlike some, I post only when I have something to say :) Until then I'm content to sit at the feet of you LJ masters, imbibing your wisdom. Um...that -is- wisdom, isn't it...?

Uh, don't drink that.

Oops. Too late. Take plenty of milk and try not to vomit.
