Good news: my wife, Sam, has had her gallbladder removed successfully and is recovering nicely in South Infirmary. She should be home tomorrow.

Bad news: The ESB, the State-owned electricity supplier for the country, has blown another fuse and plunged a large portion of the city (or least the important bit: where I live) into stygian darkness.

This power cut business is becoming a habit. Usually it's a pain in the arse because I'm restarting servers and services at work. Tonight it's a double pain in the arse because my wife's in hospital and I've two kids to get off to bed. In the dark.

Fucking ESB muppets.

Glad to hear that Sam is doing well, Myles.

As for the power company, well, yes, yes, they are muppets!

We've had at least four big power cuts across the city that I can remember since August. This in the year that the power company upped its charges something like 25% in a single hike.

*spit*

Well, the power cuts have hit a few places here in Ottawa of late, too, but nothing too bad as yet. Of course, with the coming of winter, downed power lines and various other circumstances causing power shortages will occur as Mother Nature deems fit.

Power companies are always raising prices, but 25% seems...excessive. :( What was the reason they cited for this increase?

They cited rising energy costs. The gas company did the same, and the regulators reversed a good chunk of their increases some months afterwards. The ESB haven't had the same knock-back that I'm aware of.

Here's hoping that Sam has a swift and healthy recovery.

Sam should be home tomorrow, all going well. I'm off work for the whole week to keep the kids occupied and allow her some vague chance of a peaceful recovery at home.

Glad that the good news is good, at least. Speedy recovery to Sam and may the light shine for you soon.

Power's back now, and I'm hoping to have Sam home tomorrow. Laproscopic surgery is so much better than the old sawbones style.

Give her a hug from me. Glad you've got your power back on - although going to bed by torch light can be quite fun, I remember, as long as the lit torch is left in with you!

Hey, the power could have gone out DURING the surgery. Be grateful for what you've got!

Glad to hear she'll be home safe and healing tomorrow.

Glad she is well so far - you need to move to carriglaine - I don't think we've had any power cuts so far..

Great to hear she's well.

As to the power, yeah, we've noticed you guys are up and down like a colourful metaphor. ESB muppets.
