We're away with the kids for a brief weekend break to Killarney, Co. Kerry. The weekend was conceived primarily to pad out Rowan's Lazytown Live! show, on tomorrow afternoon at the INEC, Killarney. Little did we think that our first meal out in this little Kerry tourist town was going to be so very, very pleasant.
We dined at Kobe, a small, well-hidden Japanese restaurant upstairs in a shopping arcade (remember those?) In the centre of town.
I spotted the sign and got all excited, pointed it out to Sam, who got more excited, and we made our way up the stairs to look at the menu.
There was very nearly a misstep, when Sam started looking at a pretty Thai restaurant across the thoroughfare from Kobe, but sense prevailed and we trooped into the tastefully decorated restaurant.
The staff were pleased to see us, as the place was empty. Admittedly it was only just after 6pm, but business is business and they set about charming us with nice tea recommendations and admiring our daughter's interest in noodles.
We did not have noodles. We had sushi.
A mixed plate of nigiri-zushi each and a plate of vegetarian sushi to share, to be precise, plus miso and some breadcrumbed tofu on skewers. This was accompanied by the lovely Chinese tea, "Remember the King" and a wonderfully fragrant glass of some plum wine.
Yum.
daftnewt will appreciate that Kobe had a tea menu about as long as the food menu.
I'm wondering now if we can get a babysitter in Cork who'd be willing to look after the kids, not while we sneak off to the movies or the pub, but pile into the car and drive to the next county for sushi.

We can get the Girl-O to eat most stuff in a Bento-box (rice, California role, teryaki chicken or sushi, tempora of all types) but she won't touch the soup.

I was surprised to hear complaints about how bad Dublin was for fresh fish, too. Does nowhere in Cork sell sushi-grade fish? Shame the silly Vikings founded all these places so far from the sea, eh? Or it more of fiddly-prep issue? (My version of the recipe would be on the lines of, include ingredients directly in self...)

DD - poking shiny gold Thai lion outside restaurant
me - "Be gentle with those love. That's glass in the decorations."
DD - "Ok Mama"
me - goes back to reading sushi menu
turns
spies DD now sitting astride Thai lion statue kicking gently with heels
"Jesus DD get down! That's not gentle!"
DD - "Oh. Isn't it?"
mercifully gets down but then takes out frustration by throwing herself on the outside seating and kicking her feet in the air like a dying fly.
otoh Perhaps they were glad enough not to se us come in.

The shopping centre is in the centre of town, and the restaurant is on the upper level.
Enjoy!

Re: Sushi
We learned to adore sushi from Paris so can sympathize with the sudden deprivation on moving here. We used to have a decent sushi place in the Yumi Yuki club in the Triskel but that folded when chef Seamus put all his efforts into The Ivory Tower instead. I think the Ivory Tower does sushi club nights still but with small kids that doesn't work for us so well.
Glad to hear the English Market fish have been good to you. We had a very baaad experience from there in the early days of our making sushi but perhaps it is time to try again. We should swap recipes!
Re: Sushi
Its the smaller fish stand that is directly opposite the bigger one (which is against the back wall of the market). Both salmon and tuna are yummy - haven't yet been adventurous to go further with my home made sushi skills (apart from ikura).
And tbh my recipes have mostly come from sushi books or recipes from the net - I am most proud of the square roll - looks fabulous but is so easy to do! This site is great and shows exactly what you need to do - along with other interesting techniques: http://www.imakesushi.com/howto/shikai-maki.html - Enjoy! :)
