We're away with the kids for a brief weekend break to Killarney, Co. Kerry. The weekend was conceived primarily to pad out Rowan's Lazytown Live! show, on tomorrow afternoon at the INEC, Killarney. Little did we think that our first meal out in this little Kerry tourist town was going to be so very, very pleasant.

We dined at Kobe, a small, well-hidden Japanese restaurant upstairs in a shopping arcade (remember those?) In the centre of town.

I spotted the sign and got all excited, pointed it out to Sam, who got more excited, and we made our way up the stairs to look at the menu.

There was very nearly a misstep, when Sam started looking at a pretty Thai restaurant across the thoroughfare from Kobe, but sense prevailed and we trooped into the tastefully decorated restaurant.

The staff were pleased to see us, as the place was empty. Admittedly it was only just after 6pm, but business is business and they set about charming us with nice tea recommendations and admiring our daughter's interest in noodles.

We did not have noodles. We had sushi.

A mixed plate of nigiri-zushi each and a plate of vegetarian sushi to share, to be precise, plus miso and some breadcrumbed tofu on skewers. This was accompanied by the lovely Chinese tea, "Remember the King" and a wonderfully fragrant glass of some plum wine.

Yum.

[livejournal.com profile] daftnewt will appreciate that Kobe had a tea menu about as long as the food menu.

I'm wondering now if we can get a babysitter in Cork who'd be willing to look after the kids, not while we sneak off to the movies or the pub, but pile into the car and drive to the next county for sushi.

Sounds excellent! Definitely put it on the itinerary if I ever reach Ireland :)

So...did the kids have any Miso soup or any of the sushi?

We can get the Girl-O to eat most stuff in a Bento-box (rice, California role, teryaki chicken or sushi, tempora of all types) but she won't touch the soup.

I had a positively unreasonable amount of sushi while I was in the US -- mostly at the instigation of two of my colleagues, one of whom is pesco-veggy, and the other just plain sushi-crazed, in the Mylesian mould, rather than any particular zeal on my part -- but I didn't have the heart to tell you. :) And sashimi, and I even had the distinction straight in my head for all of ten minutes, after eating, discussing, and more to the point, looking up on Wikipedia... Good to hear you've had your fix (if, doubtless, not your fill).

I was surprised to hear complaints about how bad Dublin was for fresh fish, too. Does nowhere in Cork sell sushi-grade fish? Shame the silly Vikings founded all these places so far from the sea, eh? Or it more of fiddly-prep issue? (My version of the recipe would be on the lines of, include ingredients directly in self...)

Ah - Killarney! That's the place where someone first told me of the stomach settling properties of port and brandy. Advice I have taken to heart on a couple of occasions when I have been on a rough sea and not been going to drive off the boat.

The Thai place looked promiing because it was feeding children and also because I felt guilty:
DD - poking shiny gold Thai lion outside restaurant
me - "Be gentle with those love. That's glass in the decorations."
DD - "Ok Mama"
me - goes back to reading sushi menu
turns
spies DD now sitting astride Thai lion statue kicking gently with heels
"Jesus DD get down! That's not gentle!"
DD - "Oh. Isn't it?"
mercifully gets down but then takes out frustration by throwing herself on the outside seating and kicking her feet in the air like a dying fly.

otoh Perhaps they were glad enough not to se us come in.

Just found this page and I'm so excited - will be going to Killarney tomorrow to see Billy Connolly and thought on the off chance I'd search to see if there were any sushi restaurants near! YAY :D I'm a big sushi fan and since moving from France to Cork I've been without my sushi restaurant fix - and instead have had to improvise. Those in Cork - if you're not adverse to getting your hands messy I thoroughly recommend that you learn to make your own sushi - the English Market have excellent fresh salmon (the rice and other ingredients can be purchased also at the market) and it is absolutely delicious! For those that are worried about doing it yourself; you really shouldn't it's easy - and we've not had a bad fish experience yet from there!!

I'd highly recommend Kobe (on the basis of one meal admittedly). [livejournal.com profile] sammywol makes sushi regularly, though I don't think we've tried the fresh salmon from the Market. Must give it a go. A reliable source of really fresh fish would be brilliant.

Just tried to find a listing or location for Kobe - and can't find it on the net - can anyone give me directions please? (bearing in mind I've never been to Killarney before)

Thanks in advance - another sushi lover :)

The address I have is

Kobe
Innisfallan Shopping Cente
Killarney
Tel. 064 38902

The shopping centre is in the centre of town, and the restaurant is on the upper level.

Enjoy!

We enjoyed Kobe very much indeed. Hope Mr Wol's directions help you find it. Also hope you like tea as the tea menu is astonishing!

We learned to adore sushi from Paris so can sympathize with the sudden deprivation on moving here. We used to have a decent sushi place in the Yumi Yuki club in the Triskel but that folded when chef Seamus put all his efforts into The Ivory Tower instead. I think the Ivory Tower does sushi club nights still but with small kids that doesn't work for us so well.

Glad to hear the English Market fish have been good to you. We had a very baaad experience from there in the early days of our making sushi but perhaps it is time to try again. We should swap recipes!

Ooh sorry to hear of your bad fish experience with the market :/ I just know the 'stall' that we've been going to have been excellent and never had any probs - they are even kind enough to skin the fish (makes the prep work at home that more easy).

Its the smaller fish stand that is directly opposite the bigger one (which is against the back wall of the market). Both salmon and tuna are yummy - haven't yet been adventurous to go further with my home made sushi skills (apart from ikura).

And tbh my recipes have mostly come from sushi books or recipes from the net - I am most proud of the square roll - looks fabulous but is so easy to do! This site is great and shows exactly what you need to do - along with other interesting techniques: http://www.imakesushi.com/howto/shikai-maki.html - Enjoy! :)
