A while ago I put together a Top Plays of 2007 according to iTunes. A number of old friends did an end of year swap of CDs with their top plays and jolly nice they were too. Better yet some of the new-to-me music hit that nerve just right (e.g. Halfset - Thanks Barbara!).

I'm subscribed to eMusic.com and find it pretty reliable, but not great for recommendations. So far I've used it to buy music I've heard elsewhere or that I've heard before and want to have a copy of. Now I'm looking for (listening for?) more suggestions of new music. What are you listening to at the moment that really grabs you? I have to admit that The Wolfgang Press alubm 'Funky Little Demons' has come out of retirement and is getting heavy play at the moment.

I think I better refrain from comment, on the basis of prior disclosure and general redundancy.

These collaborative recommender systems seem a little bit... poor. At least judging by Amazon's, and an admittedly rather small number of data points. Apparently, I'd like either a) a lot of stuff by the same artists, that I already own (no shit, Sherlock), b) lots of 80s MOR crap, and c) 30 Seconds From Mars records. I feel more than a little insulted.

Not sure if this is any use but I'm reading "Turn the Beat Around: The Secret History of Disco" so I am listening to "Nicky Siano's Legendary The Gallery: The Original New York Disco 1973-77" a compilation of proto disco.

Any specific recommendations from the book or compilation?

I'm intending to write a big (for me) blog entry when I'm done. But at my reading speed that will be in several weeks. The CDs the book has made me listen to most are "A Tom Moulton Mix" and "Journey into Paradise: The Larry Levan Story". Both of those are double CDs so don't buy them if you hate disco :-) I was feeling jaded about "rock" and this disco thing is great for me.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for your post. I'm not sure I could take two double CDs of disco, but I'll certainly give the highlights a listen once you've done the heavy lifting and come up with recommendations.
