As part of my recent splurge on boardgames I got a copy of Ticket to Ride Europe and we had a chance to play it last night with [livejournal.com profile] alaimacerc. I was surprised that the play was distinctly different to the original TtR, and I think I like the map as least as much as the original. I'm not convinced the tunnel rule with its additional random element is all that great, but I do like the long tickets being separated from the standard tickets.

As it happened in our game we didn't see the need to use the stations, so I don't know how much impact they'd have in play normally. Our play did seem to split the board down the middle, with me the only player really laying track in the west, and [livejournal.com profile] sammywol and [livejournal.com profile] alaimacerc fighting it out over the eastern Mediterranean and Eastern Europe. As it turned out the lack of competion in France and Spain didn't help me much. I placed last.

Final scores were [livejournal.com profile] sammywol 131, [livejournal.com profile] alaimacerc 101, me 97. With an additional +12 to everyone for stations unspent.

Hello fellow, I was wondering if you might know anyone who might be able to help out a friend of mine with some games that he might need taking off his hands? I get the impression that it's 'well-loved' (though some of it might be 'indifferent'!) and of course the posting from UK might be a deal breaker, but I thought I'd ask.

I'm not sure if there's anyone I know who would be good for this, unfortunately. Most of the gamers I know are either on the other side of the Atlantic or not keen to add to their already ludicrously large collections.

I would recommend instead contacting the nearest college or public library and see if there's a gaming society associated with them. They'd probably be happy to add to their collections, and it would be good to give the games to kids who might actually play them if at all possible.

Fun! I've only played TtR a couple of times, and with slightly abbreviated rules (youngish kids playing with), but it was fun!

We have played all of the Ticket to Ride games and each does have a distinctive play. In fact, we just bought the dice expansion that is usuable with any of the games (in essence, you use the dice instead of the train cards). But, on to stations.

You are right that sometimes there is no need of them. But, if the players end up competing for routes, it can be essential to completing your routes. There is nothing more frustrating than having a player close off the city you need to finish a route.

I play ttre with my daughter, 2 player version. She likes it. We don't tend to attack the other's routes so stations are very little used. I'm considering the Switzerland expansion which is said to be good for 2 players.

I never enjoyed TTR: Europe as much as the original. I much prefer the more open feel of the original board.

I felt it was definitely "interestingly different" from ZaZ original (which I have myself). Which is a good thing, given the price of these DoW boxes. I think it throws more emphasis on the eponymous tickets, as opposed to the greater importance in the US board of the long links. In the original that seems to often determine the winner -- or as I demonstrated recently, the spectacular loser when one tries this, and comes a cropper.
