I played Lost Cities for the first time on Friday night, another of the haul of about six games I got before Christmas that we're gradually making our way through.

It's one of those games well known in the hobby and recommended in many places as an ideal two-hander for couples. I bought it with the idea of having another quick game for [livejournal.com profile] sammywol and me to play of an evening after the kids have gone to bed.

We played the default three hands quickly, finding it an easy game to learn. It's pretty random and sometimes hanging on for the card(s) you need just doesn't pay off, but the quick play means you can have another go and hope for better luck.

I'm not sure what kind of longevity Lost Cities will have. It's quick, doesn't rely too much on bowbing your opponent and is two-player, all of which recommend it to this wife and husband team. I'm not sure, however, if the game play will have enduring appeal once we've played it a few times.

Good filler and ideal for couples trying not to watch endless repeats of QI and Never Mind The Buzzcocks.

Final score last night: Sam 127, Myles 85?

What two player ones do you recommend. Note they must not have too many instructions as I'm lazy.

Hmm. Lost Cities is good, after one play admittedly. San Juan, the card game based on Puerto Rico, is excellent and works perfectly well with 2, 3 or 4 players as an added plus. Sam and I must try the new one I got, Race for the Galaxy, as a two-player soon so we can tell you how that works for 2, though that has a steeper learning curve than Lost Cities or San Juan.

You already know about Blokus, of course. I'll have to think a bit more and see if I can come up with a longer list.

I think Lost Cities has perfectly good longevity. It's my second most-played game, with 52 face-to-face plays.

As for the query on other 2-player games, I recommend the following: Ticket to Ride (69 plays, though not all two player; plays better with the USA 1910 tin of cards); Memoir '44 (48 plays); Rumis (31 plays, though not all two player); San Juan (30 plays, though not all two player); Carcassonne: The Castle (21 plays, and the only Carcassonne that truly works for 2-player play, though Carcassonne: The City is probably fine too); Mystery Rummy (any of them); or Seasons (13 plays, another nice Rummy game).

That's good to hear. I was wondering if the sameness of the play becomes a factor, but any game that can get 50+ plays can't be that repetitive.

Thanks for the other recommendations for two player games. I found that [livejournal.com profile] sammywol and I get good play out of 2 player Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers, and I suspect for [livejournal.com profile] marzut's purposes, Memoir '44 might be on the heavy side, and have too many swallowable pieces in a house with a growing baby. I've played Battlelore, and love it: how does Memoir '44 compare?

And how did the overall winner, Sammy_Wol, think of Lost Cities?

(As an aside, I've successfully converted a few friends and medical residents into Euro-Gaming with ?Lost Cities.)

You'll have to ask her. And clearly I'll have to play her again (and again) until I get the right result.

Lost Cities is a big hit with my 12 year old. Enough luck to keep her interested. Enough strategy for me. Plus you can just take the cards when traveling.
