The first of Westlake's 'Dortmunder' novels, which revolves about the several heists of an emerald, each failing to secure the gem and each accompanied by great dialogue and witty reversals. Fun comic heist/caper story with beautiful light touches and swift character sketches.

This novel was accompanied by many pauses to read aloud a section to [livejournal.com profile] sammywol as I had to explain the laughter. I only hope I didn't spoil the book for her in the process.

I just read my first Dortmunder story - Westlake provided a novella for McBain's _Transgressions_, which I am currently working through - and have been keen to read more. At least now I know where to start.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Hot Rock and expect I'll hunt up other Westlakes. Sam and I have fond memories for a Christophe Lambert film "Why Me?" adapted from a Dortmunder novel, so maybe I'll chase that down next.
