Yay! My new games arrived. I've now got Dominion, Tempus, Incan Gold and Battle Line sitting on a tottering pile in the living room beside the stereo. Looking good, and I got a chance to play Dominion last night with [livejournal.com profile] sammywol and [livejournal.com profile] irishkate.

There was a fair amount of setting up and familiarising ourselves with the cards, but we picked it up pretty quickly. It took longer than expected as I missed the set-up rule about only including 12 each of the Estates, Duchies and Provinces. It would have ended a little sooner I suspect if we'd had the right numbers of cards.

I think [livejournal.com profile] irishkate did very nicely with the strategy we called "It's Takes A Village (or Three)" and turned some very nice combo hands with villages and smithies or markets to her advantage. We all enjoyed it I think and are looking forward to trying out the other kingdom cards. [livejournal.com profile] alaimacerc is hereby under orders to read the card descriptions before settling down to play; so says Kate!

The final scores were [livejournal.com profile] irishkate 48, [livejournal.com profile] mylescorcoran 42 and [livejournal.com profile] sammywol 37.

Not bad, and not much in the way of 'point at the weirdos and laugh' reporting either.

Yay, Dominion!

IM me when you're on at some point that's daylight here -- I'll try to talk you through Dominion on BSW (where it's by far the most popular game, currently).

Would it really have made the game shorter if you'd remembered to only include 12 of each vp card? If you're playing with 3 players and don't have extra cards (and have remembered not to play with the blue-bordered cards, which you should, except for kingdom deck, put into the bottom of the box and never look at again), the only way it should make a difference is if you end by running out of estates and two other piles (whereas, usually you end by running out of provinces).

I highly, btw, recommend the unoffical variation "equal turns" -- where you end at the end of the round where someone causes the endgame -- rather than possibly having whoever goes first get an extra turn over everyone else as -well- as having the last chance at the provinces (or whatever else is left). It doesn't make a big difference, but it's certainly fairer.

Oh yes, the slip-up wouldn't have made much of a difference in a three player game. It's just vaguely annoying.

I like the 'everyone gets the same number of turns' rule and will suggest it to our group. I played another game last night with Sam and while I won by one point she did have a storming last round and ended the game having been the first player.

I'm away for a few days but will try and take up your BSW break-in-the-newbie offer. I've never used BSW before and could do with a friendly introduction.

I find 'random extra turn' effects a little vexing too, so I certainly approve of that variant (sight unseen, mind).

I played a game or two of Puerto Rico on BSW a while back. If I recall, the interface was mostly straightforward enough. Be prepared to get yelled at in German to get a move on, while you get the hang of it, though -- even in "Englishtown".

It's that manic speed play that makes me nervous about dipping my toe in BSW. I'd like to get some experience with the interface before getting into serious games with strangers.

Yeah, the pace tends to be a good deal brisker than face-to-face, I imagine partially due to the lack of housekeeping tasks (not to say chit-chat and eating cookies), and partially due to an expectation that it go that way. I don't think BSW does this, but a couple of the online games (one version of Catan, certainly, and I was told one version of Puerto Rico) also has "'bot" opponents (for either solo play or a making-up-the-numbers combination).
