[livejournal.com profile] alaimacerc brought round one of his new purchases, On the Underground, last night and we gave it a go.

It's a track laying and route completing sort of game. One that actually seems to produce something resembling the London Tube at the end, which is nice. I managed a good 11-pt loop for a big score, and about three of the 'connect the lost and found' items. I would have lost nastily if at any point either Sam or Alai had bowbed me on the loop, but they are gentlemen (more or less) and the final scores were S 57, A 60, M 67.

I first played this in August '07 at a games/SF/filk con in Cambridge. Interestingly the designed was there and the game had only just come out so he was answering questions and talking to people playing to get feedback. Apparently the 'circle line rule' had to be added so that a circle line would be produced as it didn't happen any other way*. He'd also been working on a New York version of the game - no idea if it's come out yet - and I suggested he do the Tokyo underground as well.

*which is rather ironic as the 'circle line' is going to become more of a spiral line fairly soon.

There is a Tokyo expansion for the game, released last year if Boardgamegeek is right. You give good advice, clearly.

That be Recombination, by any chance?

(After twice starting a comment lengthily alluding to its numerous aliases, predecessors, and its forthcoming successor, and losing the lot in browser fubars both times, I've decided to KISS this time.)

Indeed it be. And I'm hoping to get to the sequel this year if I can sort out my travel to Worldcon in a compatible way.

Having to the Great-Grandcon of them all, Conjunction, and since to all the Gloranthocentric followups, I've toyed with going to some of the BRSish ones, but haven't managed it to date. I should work on fixing that, sometime...

A fun game, but I suggest playing it with no more than 3, else the downtime starts to make it unenjoyable.

Quite intriguing. By no means heavy, but with plenty of "chrome" to make it feel specifically Metro-ish, and not just Yet Another Connectionist Train Game.

Definitely a bit of a "local optimisation problem" game in terms of tactics; doesn't feel quite as utterly devoid of top-level strategy as, say, a Torres, but perhaps getting that way...
