This seems like a good idea. I wonder if it will catch on?

Quoting from the site:

Individual-i stands for:

  • Freedom from surveillance
  • Personal privacy
  • Anonymity
  • Equal protection
  • Due process
  • Freedom to read, write, think, speak, associate, and travel
  • The right to make your own choices about sex, reproduction, marriage, and death
  • The right to dissent

My only point of disagreement is more of a feeling .. that we don't have to set these principles up in opposition to more communal virtues. IYSWIM.

I agree. There's a certain Western cult of the individual that rankles, and increasingly so as I learn more as a father. The list of freedoms and rights of the individual have to apply to everyone, and sometimes that means curbing your desire and actions to allow others to exercise those rights too.

Anonymity in what context? I do not see it as a blanket right the way I would class the last five.

DD is a supporter though. Being drawn to the screen by the twin attractions of Dada and Bagpuss icons, she then pointed at the 'i' symbols in turn as 'Dada, Mama, Roro.'

'Dada, Mama, Roro'. Excellent!

I agree with your point on anonymity. I'm no David Brin (thanks be!) but I do believe that an absolute right to privacy is incompatible with membership in a community. That said, I also believe that it's right to be able to say things publicly without having the government figure out who you are and come in the night to cart you away. There are anonymising relays on the Internet for a reason after all.

All those rights, what about responsibilities?

Again, I agree. In the West it's easy to get caught with our rights and forget that we have responsibilities too. It's also easy to forget that many rights we take for granted are far from automatic for the majority of people in the world. I don't think it wrong for individuals of all stripes to stand up and say they support basic freedoms such as those outlined above.

I'm not behind each of them 100% however, as I've already said.
