Yesterday was Pat and Aoife's wedding. It all went well, with a fairly pleasant ceremony in the Honan Chapel in UCC and a reception afterwards out in the Fernhill Golf Club, Carrigaline. The day was a scorcher, probably the hottest of the summer so far, and they had a lovely day for photographs in the President's Garden. Most of the usual gang from CC were there, except Sean and Rosemarie, as Rosemarie's mother is in hospital now, a tough blow as her father is still in recovering from his cancer operation.
Sam managed to get her folks to babysit for the ceremony, but she had to come home for the bedtime routine and missed the reception. I went along, though as I was driving I kept off the drink and left early (round 10.30). The reception was good, though the food was only average. Everyone seemed to have a grand time with lots of laughter and joking about. Our table was solely lads, with Sam and Rosemarie missing, so the conversation was coarse and amusing, though probably no more so than it would have been with Sam and Rosemarie, both of them earthy girls if ever there were. I did get to talk to Deirdre a bit, who was having fun getting ready for the dancing. I spent more time talking to Shirley, Barry's girlfriend, who was once again entertaining and thoughtful. Better yet she and Barry offered to babysit for us, which I thought was a very generous thing. On the strength of that we chatted for a while about childcare policy and social policy on children in Ireland, as well as more joking and light-hearted topics.
I took loads of photos of both the Honan Chapel bit and the reception, and I imagine I would have had more to take if I'd stayed later. I didn't get to dance really, as I was probably too sober for that, though I did dance with a 4-year old girl relation of the family called Ciara. She was hyper and had told Deirdre "I'm going to look at all the boys and decide which ones I like and dance with them later." A girl of strong opinions, obviously. We waltzed for a short while, her feet hovering above the floor and we whirled about in a spinning helicopter ride that left me dizzy. I don't know how she managed to stay upright. I was strongly reminded of Rowan and I hope that she's equally friendly and fun when she's 4 years old.
