My daughter Rowan is in hospital. She's been suffering from a viral infection for just over 3 weeks and on Wednesday night started vomiting. The doctor we took her too at midnight was worried and had her admitted to St. Finbarrs' Children's Unit. The consultant there (as well as the registrar and some other specialist who's name or position I failed to catch) all have a faintly annoyed air with us, as it seems they can't pin down what's wrong with Rowan. She's stopped vomiting, which I'm grateful for, but she's still intermittently nausea, suffering from abdominal cramps and generally looking like a ghost. She hasn't got a fever and there's no other signs of a bacterial infection, so we're grateful for that at least. During the days she's up and down a lot, one minute laughing and much like her usual self, the next cranky and listless, only to be followed by clingy and more tummy pains.

I hope we get some idea soon of how long this is going to take to clear, if is a virus, or of what exactly is going on, if it isn't a virus. I hate seeing Rowan like this and I hate being unable to make her better.

Best wishes. Mysterious sicknesses of loved ones can be very tough.

Thanks. I hope that we'll get a clearer idea soon, if only so that the consultant cheers up a bit.

Horrible. Is Sam able/allowed to stay with her?

Thankfully yes. The set-up at St. Finbarr's is very good, with a separate room for each child and a bed for both child and parent. Unfortunately the bed is too short for Sam and therefore way too short for me, so Sam has had all the night shift so far. Luckily Rowan is sleeping through the night.

Ack! Poor little thing--it is always so awful to see them sick.

Good wishes for a recovery soon!

Oh, man....

I'm so sorry that Rowan is feeling unwell. If this was our own little one we would be sick with worry and concern, and wishing beyond anything else that she would be feeling better and be back to her adorable and playful self. No doubt you guys feel the same.

I hope this is just a viral bug with some residual GI malaise, Myles. The lack of finding anything sinister is actually a good thing. My thoughts are with you, your wife, and of course your little girl.

If there is anything I can do, please ask.

Thanks for the reassurances. It's good to hear that you think the lack of findings is a good thing. I'm kind of thinking at this stage it might be some sort of food allergy given the amount of times the consultant has asked if the coeliac test results are back yet. They're not back yet.

Wait and see, and keep her as comfortable and entertained as possible. That's the plan.

FYI, Galway Ireland is the world's hot spot for Celiac; somehow those of Celtic ancestry are genetically predisposed.

And, as Voltaire once said, the art of medicine is to entertain the patient while they get better on their own.

P.S. I hope Rowan's feeling better. I'm up late (3:30 am local time) as Mrs.DM was called into the ER, and I can't sleep.

Poor Rowan! And poor Mum & Dad, too. I hope it all gets sorted out soon and you all feel better.

Thanks for all the good thoughts. Sorry for the anonymous replies above. I was half-asleep and didn't notice I wasn't logged in.

The poor pet, & poor ye! We had to bring Alex to hospital a year or so ago cos' he was vomiting and couldn't hold down liquids. Even though it was nothing serious in the end it's horrible seeing your little baby in a hospital bed.
Hope she makes a full & speedy recovery & is back to her lovely self again real soon.

Sounds very stressful and worrying. I hope she gets better soon and you're all able to get a good rest.
