mylescorcoran at 04:04pm on 05/12/2005Saturday night saw us dining out with friends. We received a call on Friday from an old friend in Dublin who was coming down to Cork for the weekend. We were already planning to take our daughter Rowan out for pizza so we arranged to meet Conor and Aoife at Milanos, a pizza place in the centre of town. I also rang Marie and Utz to see if they were interested in dinner. We ended up with six adults and one nearly three-year-old meeting at 6.00.
I was amazed by how good Rowan was. She sat up in her chair, watched the goings-on, chatted briefly to anyone who expressed an interest in her, and got properly stuck into her dinner. We were there from about 6.00 until 7.50, and Rowan behaved impeccably the whole time. She probably managed to spill less food on herself than I did on me. She must get it from her mother.
It was great to catch with Conor and Aoife, whom we hadn't seen since Worldcon in August. I was glad to hear that Conor's got another novel underway, and that he recently successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis. I was glad also to have Marie and Utz meet some of our Dublin friends. I'm always slightly nervous when various of the circles of people I know cross. I like them all; how will they like each other? I had nothing to worry about.
In summary: a pleasant meal out in good company with the dynamic daughter proving herself a star. To top it off, she dozed off in the buggy on the way home and went to bed with barely a peep.
