One of the peculiarities of having a birthday close to Christmas is that I often end up with a double dose of cash or tokens to spend on myself in January. This year I'm looking at about €100 worth of potential presents and I have no real burning desires. Part of the problem is the increasingly choked feeling in the house as we're running out of space for all the books and other stuff we have. I don't really want to get more physical things. Any suggestions for digital presents that might appeal?

I've been listening to the Kate Bush double album Aerial that I got for Christmas. It's early days, but I'm not particularly impressed by a lot of it. However, I am in love with "Sunset", a track from the second CD. The rich, warm quality of the music and lyrics is almost hypnotising. I find myself listening to it on repeat for several plays, just enjoying the warm feeling. A good song for fighting winter blues, I think.

I love that one too! The album as a whole has been a bit of a grower for me - I've got to like it a lot more after repeated listens. The second CD is still better than the first, though.

I imagine that I'll grow to like the album more as I listen to it a few more times. I find in this age of MP3 players and shuffled playlists that I'm listening to a lot less albums in their entirety, however, so it may take a conscious effort to give Aerial the chance it deserves.

It's not digital but we could put some of the cash towards a bookcase to put along the wall next to the couch now we freed up that space.

I have hardly heard enough of Aerial to judge but I am glad there is some of it you already like. it might be a bit like Red shoes in that regard, only this time there's two of them to winnow down.

Someone says 'Wow! That's my little bear!' Guess who?!

It's Rowan's little bear, on the basis that pretty much everything we own is hers now as far as she's concerned. What she'll use my razor for I don't know.

I don't know what I use it for either.

I'm still deciding if I like this new Kate Bush album, too.

As for other purchases, you could pay for something less tangible, like an upgrade on your Flickr or LJ account. Perhaps you could use the money to pay for lessons or a class for yourself or even for Rowan (ie. dance, music, gym, art, etc.).

I love Sunset too. I play it all the time.

The new Bruce Cockburn album is really good.

Are you a Bruce Cockburn fan? I was exposed to him first by Alison Cook, all those years ago. I have a bunch of his stuff on tape but I haven't listened to them in ages. Thanks for the reminder.
