Today is our national holiday celebrating our national saint, Patrick. We traditionally go out, watch the parade and get rained on and this year was no exception. The parade this year in Cork was compact, to be polite, or pretty short, if you're being more blunt. Nonetheless we had fun, our daughter was suitably awed by the passing drums, dragons and a pirate ship. I was favourably impressed by the various cultural and national representatives from places like Cote d'Ivoire, Mali, Poland and the Phillipines. Even in the few years I've been in Cork since I moved back from France I've noticed an improvement in the mix and variety of people in the city. I was happy to see some of them taking their place in the parade.

After the parade, the pizza. We went to a local pizza joint and had a pleasant lunch together before making our soggy way home through the rain. Luckily we're only about ten minutes walk from the city centre.

Sam was tempted by a pizza with leeks and other greens on top, but in the end went with a salad nicoise.

I was reading today in the newspaper that until recently, St. Patrick's Day was more wildly and widely celebrated outside of Ireland, and that the day was more a sober and sedentary holiday.

From what I recall you writing in A&E in the past, Ireland has only belatedly been tapping the gold mine of opportunity with marketing the day with more hedonistic fevor for both vistors and her own citizens.

Oh yes. The celebration is now a three day affair, and there's lots more advertising and commerce associated with it. Still no topless lasses and beads a la Mardi Gras in New Orleans, but given the weather round March 17th that's probably a blessing for all concerned.

A newspaper over here reported that almost all of the ministers from the Irish Republic's government would be spending that day in various foreign countries, leaving only two of their number to join in parades at home...

Hardly surprising. There was several column inches on the various ministers' travel expenses in most of the national papers recently. They love to travel, our lot.
