Last Sunday we had some friends over for boardgaming and trotted out two short games as a change of pace. For a while now we've been playing only a single game in an evening, fitting it in between about 9.00 and 11.00pm. This time though the votes were for Bohnanza and TransAmerica, both short games that work well with the five player numbers we had.

In the interests of fair reporting, unlike previously I lost miserably in both games. In the first, Bohnanza, I just wasn't forceful enough in the trades and lost out to Marie storming her way to win with a final score of 15, 13, 10, 9, 9. Those '9's were [livejournal.com profile] alaimacerc and me. Sigh.

Never mind, I thought, I'll play TransAmerica and do better. No such luck. I lost that one as well, diving off into the sea (or just about; we had to end when I was one space from the game end condition) while [livejournal.com profile] sammywol was barely out of the train shed at the start of the track. Nonetheless a fun game, and I think I enjoyed the TransAmerica more, as it was that bit shorter and had better pace. We must play it against the clock again. It adds some spice to the game.

Anyway. I still like Ra.

Ever since getting Ticket To Ride, we haven't really played TransAmerica. The latter is likely still popular with our son (his "in the now" attention span means that he probably won't suggest we play it, but will happily play it if we suggest it: currently, his thoughts are directed at IceTowers), but I can't honestly see playing the latter railgame when the former is sitting on the shelf...

Haven't got TTR:Marklin yet, though, despite hearing good things about it...

I dunno; it depends, for me, on what I'm in the mood for; it's not like they're in any way similar games.

I'm much more likely to play TTR in person, and TA online, FWIW.

TTR:Marklin is pretty good -- very different (it successfully makes short routes good, at least some of the time, which takes some doing), but cool. We've played it once -- I (playing long routes) lost, but probably would have won if I'd have pulled large tickets once more.

(the two big differences: passengers and the division of the tickets into two stacks: large and small.)

I don't really see the two games as that similar. Neither of them is really much to do with trains or rails, and TTR is a bit more a "thinking persons' game" than TA and tends to run longer so it wouldn't come out under the same circumstances that TA does.

That said, I'd love to play more Ticket To Ride but I don't own a copy and one of other players has to remember to bring it round.

Ahem! Not out of the train-shed at all, thankyou very much. Thanks to Utz finishing off the last round for me by connecting my green city instead of his own I won every round. And I intend to enjoy the feeling because its chances of ever happeneing again are slim to nothing.

i didn't win Ra at all and liked it fine (although there was a ghastly moment when I thought that I might win and that would really have made me feel bad about that last auction in Round 2.
