Well, Irish Broadband finally turned up today, 2 hours late, and determined that our house is too short for wireless broadband. Even with a 10 ft. mast on the roof they couldn't get a signal over the houses behind us, which lie between us and the city centre.

Eircom have been useless too. I've tried to get a DSL connection before trying the wireless option, but Eircom's line to us isn't up to carrying DSL. It's their f'ing line, but we have to suffer. Better yet, even if we get a new line to the house (at our expense) they won't guarantee it will be sufficient to carry DSL either. Is it any wonder that broadband adoption in Ireland is proceeding in fits and starts? I'm having a fit right now.

Gah. Big sympathies. This further confirms my belief that Eircom are EEEVIL.

I think we might be able to manage to arrange something with one of the neighbours to get the wireless receiver mounted higher up, but it's too close to Christmas now to really get anything sorted out. I'll try the various broadband over phone-line companies again and see if anything new can be done about the quality of the line. With increased competition in the area maybe someone will be willing to look a little harder at getting the line improved.

I feel your pain and frustration. We've been trying to get DSL here for 3 years, but no dice. Our friend a half mile away has it...the hospital less than a quarter of a mile away has it...but we can't get it. Calling the various suppliers is pointless, since they always say "We're working to get it to all areas". Arrrggghhh!

Hey Doc! Nice to see your face/icon. Yes, I despair of remaining in the digital dark ages; still it probably means I read more, which ain't no bad thing.

We ever going to see you in A&E's pages again?

I keep meaning to write up a zine, but real life and my middle aged memory keep conspiring against me.

I swear, I am the only person I know in this whole benighted country who installed broadband without any problems. Everyone else has gone through hell with lines and phones.
