Lifted from [livejournal.com profile] nhw, my take on the last year.

1. What did you do in 2004 that you'd never done before?

Drove over 60 miles an hour, with a christmas tree and my father-in-law sharing the front seats.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I don't generally make or keep New Years' resolutions.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

No

4. Did anyone close to you die?

My uncle Conal, after a year's fight with cancer.

5. What countries did you visit?

None.

6. What would you like to have in 2005 that you lacked in 2004?

Balance.

7. What date from 2004 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

September 29th. I got my first pair of glasses.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Finding old friends through LJ and striking up conversations anew.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Apart from my eyes, just the little, but important, things like telling people I love them and showing them that I mean it.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Thankfully no. A great improvement on 2003 with its appendicitis and kidney stone hijinks.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

My 512MB USB pendrive.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?

My wife, Sam, has been a sterling partner this year. She's shouldered the majority of the work raising Rowan, and managed to keep her hand in with the third level teaching in UCC, while remaining sane and cuddly most of the time. My mother, whose brother and sister died in the last couple of years, and yet she's kept her life together, makes regular trips to be with her grand-daughter and us, and keeps a sense of humour through it all. My parents-in-law, Tom and Patty, who have been invaluable help to us with Rowan and with our (now much less) delapidated home.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?

Bush voters, US military prison staff, the rebels and government in Sudan, those who've blocked environmental reforms at every turn.

14. Where did most of your money go?

Bills, food, books, internet dial-up. (We really must get broadband!)

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

The Invisibles, a film for the comics fan in me; Garth Nix's Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen novels, engrossing world building; My daughter, Rowan.

16. What songs will always remind you of 2004?

"Somebody Told Me" by the Killers.

17. Compared to this time last year,
i. are you happier or sadder?

Happier, I think.

ii. thinner or fatter?

Thinner! I've lost about 3kgs in the last couple of months by watching more closely what I eat.

iii. richer or poorer?

Broke at a higher level.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Writing, roleplaying, reading.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

TV watching, Civ III playing.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

With Sam's parents, and then up to Dublin to my mother's for New Year.

22. Did you fall in love in 2003?
No. Well no more than usual.

23. How many one night stands?
None.

24. What was your favourite TV programme?

Nothing really stands out. I've watched The 4400 and Battlestar Galactica on and off, and some of the new Stargate SG1 series, but not very closely. I've actively started avoiding Stargate Atlantis. I regret not having seen more of Stephen Fry's QI.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
No.

26. What was the best book you read?
Best books: Paladin of Souls, by Lois McMaster Bujold; Singularity Sky, by Charlie Stross; The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Seddon; Gates of Fire, by Steven Pressfield; The Dazzle of Day by Molly Gloss; The Fortunate Fall by Raphael Carter; Dogs in the Vineyard by Vincent Baker; Trollbabe by Ron Edwards.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

MP3 blogs.

28. What did you want and get?

A new laptop.

29. What did you want and not get?

One of those 40GB mp3 players.

30. What was your favourite film of this year?

The Incredibles (or The Invisibles for you early adopters).

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

Celebrated as usual with friends in Dublin round at my mother's house with wine, cheese, and incredibly rich chocolate brownies. I was 35 back in January.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Having a conversation with Rowan.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2003?

Loose.

34. What kept you sane?

Reading, roleplaying, my imagination.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Huh? Unfortunately I tend to fancy people I know, rather than strangers.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

The US presidential election.

37. Who did you miss?

Ken Maher (gone to Belgium) and Katharine von Stackelberg (gone to Washington D.C.).

38. Who was the best new person you met?

Sandra Cronin, who works on the Help Desk in the Computer Centre in UCC. She's mad.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2004

Breadmaking is good for the soul.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year

"Every five years or so I look back on my life
And I have a good laugh"
from Watershed by the Indigo Girls.

Please tell me you mean the Incredibles, 'cos me missing a film version of the Invisibles would be irony at its most bastardly.

So there *is* a film of The Invisibles, or is a freudian slip for The Incredibles? And if the former, where do I get it?????

One lousy typo... (mutter, spit)

I meant, of course, the Incredibles.

(Hah, I got to watch the alt-dimensional Grant Morisson uberwork and didn't invite you lot.)
