Last friday saw the UCC Computer Centre's annual night out for Christmas. This year's do was held in the Roberts Cove Inn in Roberts Cove, an out of the way village somewhere lost in the coastal wilds between Carrigaline and Kinsale, but we got a lift from Barry O'Sullivan and his wife, Rose. They are expecting their second child in April and, understandably, the conversation in the car was entirely about toddlers and babies, mirroring an earlier conversation a couple of years ago at a Christmas dinner when Sam was a new mother and Rose was expecting. We had lots to talk about and compare.
Sam was a bit worried at the start to be opposite Mike and beside Sandra (whom she didn't know), but Sandra is great fun and very gregarious, and Mike was in chatty mood. On my side Aoife was in good form too, her back better after recent aches and pains brought on by heavy lifting of seaweed in her new job. As ever Pat, Barry and particularly Dan were in expansive, entertaining moods, so we were both amused and entertained.
The food was pretty good, if not particularly imaginative. We both tried the steak, which was nice and actually had some flavour, but it was the deserts that shone. I had a white and dark chocolate mousse; a small, intense helping that tasted wondeful. Sam had a lemon and lime mousse that was delicate in flavor, but proved too much for her after the steak.
After the meal we all sat about, drinking and chatting, until Sam and I got a cab home (€30!) just after midnight. Poor Tom and Patty were babysitting and still had to make the trip home after we got back at 12.50.
We were well ready to leave by midnight, however. We've both lost whatever night-owl tendencies we might have had. Parenthood no doubt.
