Hee, hee. Gleeful mutterings, etc. My copy of Battlelore, long lost in the bowels of the Irish postal system, appeared today just as I was going for lunch. Christmas has come early to this little corner of Cork.

Calloo Callay!

I'm still waiting for my FLGS to secure a copy. I'm still wondering whether I should really buy this darn thing: after all, I alread have C&C: Ancients... do I really need two different lines of this thing?

(Of course, perhaps with Battlelore /and/ C&C I could try to mount those crazy "lost Roman legion" scenarios... 8))

C&C + Battlelore:

"Those damned Carthaginians are attacking again. Only this time it's not elephants. It's giants spiders!"

Hmm, I can see the possibilities. I haven't played any of the other Borg titles in this series, but Battlelore sure looks pretty. It also has dwarfs with Tam O'Shanters, so how could I resist?

And it time for the holidays at that. Now give it to [livejournal.com profile] sammywol and let her wrap it up and put it away for another few weeks.

yah, that's happening!

Right.

In fact, it was only because I am super-husband with amazing sensitivity powers that I didn't force [livejournal.com profile] sammywol to play the Agincourt scenario last night after Rowan went to bed. She was knackered, and it would have been a bit unfair.

It is gorgeous though.

I did a demo last weekend and boy is it a slick game. I have now played three of the Borg games and this is the prettiest of the all - sorry but ancients is at the bottom of the heap for me - call me shallow ;)

It really fixes some of the randomness issues that I have with Memoir '44 since a lot of the more "special" cards are in the Lore deck instead of the Command deck.

It really is top notch.

Oh, and mine's arriving this coming Monday! Yay! Let us know how play is going, Myles.

I haven't played Memoir '44, so I don't really have a comparison. Are the equivalent of the command cards more random, or the hand size smaller in Memoir '44?

Why is C&C:Ancients the worst of the three?

Roll on Monday!

Randomness: Many of the abilities in the Lore deck are command cards in Memoir '44, so you have less solid tactical cards. In BattleLore you could ignore the Lore deck and play the tactical game soundly (albiet at a slight disadvantage). The Lore is "extra" stuff, not part of what you have to manage in your command hand. Don't get me wrong the Lore cards are crucial but they are handled more independantly. That's going to be important when you start building your own councils and opt for creatures instead, I think.

Ancients: nah, I was just joking about the production value and how they specifically noted in the BattleLore primer that you didn't have to put stickers on the pieces :)

Ah, I could see that would make a big difference. The balance of the command cards seems central to the game play to me, and more randomness in that deck could throw a lot of games out of kilter.

I can't wait to try out the Earth Elemental and Hill Giant. My wife has dibs on the Giant, so I think I'll be shaking the battleground at the earliest opportunity.
