The BBC news site this morning had a piece headlined gender bias 'increases poverty'.

UN SecGen Annan said "Discrimination against women of all ages deprives the world's children - all of them, not just the half who are girls - of the chance to reach their potential."

See, sexism isn't only wrong, it's stupid.

It's obvious, but none the less important to highlight for that.

It isn't just obvious, it's old news. It's why the Family Allowance was given to women, and why child-tax credits are a poorer means to lift a family from poverty than money given direct to women as a giro.

We've had the research for this for at least 120 years now.

I agree that this is (or should be) well known. Why is it that despite its long history and widespread knowledge this fact doesn't really appear to impact local or international policy then?

(Assuming that I'm not just ignorant of the widespread adoption of women-friendly financing policies in the developing world.)

Sniggers! I wonder if he'd appreciate the implication though.
