Rowan Tree and Red Thread

Tonight my daughter Rowan was drawing crayon pictures as sammywol and I ate dinner. She proudly announced she was drawing a map of the world. She drew a big circle in black and filled it with rough shapes and coloured them in. She said "with Dublin and Finland. And my house, and Tom and Patty's." She drew four rough circles at the top of the page, outside the big, black circle, indicating the four places as she did so. "And they're all on that orange island there", she said, pointing to an orange-filled shape on the map below.

Wow.

I was impressed by her grasp of the whole idea of maps, and bemused by her mental equivalence of Dublin, Finland, her house and her grandparents' house. Sometimes, being a dad is the best thing ever.
