I got to see Iron Man last night. Thanks to the brave [livejournal.com profile] irishkate who volunteered babysitting services and let [livejournal.com profile] sammywol and I escape the kids and house for a few hours.

The film was great fun and very much as expected from the reports. Downey Jr. is a natural Tony Stark, Paltrow's Potts has steel enough for her own suit (hi [livejournal.com profile] mizkit!), and the pacing was pretty much spot on for a superhero origin story. It looks like it has legs as a series of movies too, so long as Downey Jr. keeps it together long enough to make more movies.

After recommending it to you, I'm glad you liked it! Be aware that Stark has a cameo in the Hulk movie as well.

I saw a picture for the Hulk movie at the cinema last night. I hadn't realised it was so close to release.

Can't say the Hulk is one of my preferred Marvel characters, so I'm less keen to see the film than I was with Iron Man.

I've been meaning to go see the-movie-of-the-Iron-Man-trailer for a while, but procrastination, distractedness by other means, and lack of social facilitation has so far succeeded in stopping me. Perhaps I can rope in some of the gaming gr-- hey, you guys went without me! *mutter*

I had three thoughts on Downey in the role:

* His entire life's been "method" prep for this.

* Isn't someone in Hollywood, backing not just a high-budget movie, but what's being flagged as a "franchise" of same, being a little, um, *brave* with this decision?

* Why did he give what must have been at most a 90s interview to the BBC in which he used the word "mythology" about three time? Lucas-grade "Campbellwash" warning, methinks.

The film's good and doesn't suffer from any overt Campbellian influence. The standard 'lose the mask in the final battle' is there, probably because it's a hell of a lot easier to act without a mask on, and it's not challenging the stereotypes and tropes particularly, but it is a fun superhero movie with lots of humour. I enjoyed it.

Downey is precisely right and of course a risk for just that reason. I hope they get the rest of the series in the can before he's rehab-bound again.
