So Harney's scrapped the cervical cancer vaccine. Damn it all, Ireland, why did you vote this shower back in last time? Why?

And how much more does treatment for cervical cancer cost than a vaccination...

This is so boneheaded... Time to start a campaign that sends invitations to funerals to the health minister, because that is what this will mean - totally avoidable deaths.

Precisely. I don't know the numbers but it seems highly unlikely that the money saved on vaccinations would approach the subsequent costs of cancer treatments that could be avoided.

But that's Mary Harney up and down. She's no friend to women.

Apparently the problem is that they're considering the potential cancer costs to be in a future 20-40 years out, whereas they can save money immediately on not giving it out now.

Idiots.

The question of the precise discount rate for long term investments is a vexed one, as the investment (or lack thereof) in environmentally sustainable practices shows, but I agree.

Idiots!

Her statement was a breathtaking exercise in self justification. The real story is that the HSE were never going to bring this in next year and there are documents circulating saying so. So this is another money saving cut that isn't really.

The HSE want to 'consult with parents.' DAMN THEM! They wouldn't be consulting with anyone if it was a prostate cancer vaccine.

You are so fucking right about that.

Damn. Funeral invitations -- or at least making it loud and public every time a death could have been prevented -- sounds like a good idea.

Not as good an idea as the vaccine, though.

Isn't there an old Irish custom about the sacrifice of public officials? Perhaps it's time to return to traditional values.
